Level 46 – The Dual Damage Show

Posted by mixmoff On July - 29 - 2010

This week Mixmoff and Dr. Scares are joined by special guest host Jonah “Spambot” Gregory from WingDamage.com The gang talks about the idiocy of console fanboys, backlog games like Resident Evil 5 and the Force Unleashed, and they run down the list of games due to be shown off at GDC… I mean GamesCom… at some conference or other in Germany.

Kongregate Mounting a Push to Android?

Posted by mixmoff On July - 28 - 2010

Fresh off his company’s recent acquisition by Gamestop, Kongregate CEO Jim Greer made a few statements hinting at avenues the gaming site is looking to explore in the near future.

Speaking with GamesBeat:

We want to go beyond the desktop to mobile and other venues for gaming. What gamers want is to play games on different screens. We are not big on the iPhone. We make social games and monetize them through our own platform. Apple wants to control its own platform. We are betting heavily on Android because it is more open and they are working on providing a great experience. We are looking for other opportunities like that.

With an estimated 7.7 million Android phones sold last year, a number that was doubtless dwarfed this year, the Android Market is a major player in mobile game sales. A concentrated effort to expand and improve the level of games on the market could be a boon for gamers and indie developers alike.

Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger vs. Darkdeath Evilman

Posted by mixmoff On July - 28 - 2010

Let me set a scenario for you. A very real and very deadly scenario soon to be played out in NIS’s upcoming PSP RPG “Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger vs. Darkdeath Evilman” due out this winter.

In the year 20xx… a lovely prophecy told of a baby who would be the catalyst for bringing an unprecedented danger to the world. The people called this infant ‘Super Baby’ and heavily pampered her as their savior.

However that would not last long. Since the baby grew so famous, so fast, the ‘Demon General Darkdeath Evilman’ has kidnapped her.

Undefeated since first appearing, the Demon General, Darkdeath Evilman has cut down every single hero to date. On the other side we have a hero, also undefeated and said to even be immortal. The invincible Absolute Victory Unlosing Ranger!

If the Super Baby dies at the hands of Darkdeath Evilman, the world as we know it will end!

NIS seems to have a special understanding of exactly what the western audience finds hilarious about localized text from Japanese games. This is almost like Engrish of the second degree; oddball translation thrown in intentionally to craft some sort of theater of the absurd. It may not hit home with everyone, but I think I’ll go find my PSP now…

GameStop Acquires Kongregate

Posted by mixmoff On July - 27 - 2010

It seems like just last week Gamestop CEO J. Paul Raines was chirping on about finding new online ventures for the gaming mega-chain, and today he may just have it. Gamestop announced today that they have purchased one of the premiere flash-gaming communities: Kongregate.

GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines,
“Kongregate advances GameStop’s digital strategy by providing a gaming platform for casual, mobile and browser games that can be promoted and played by our existing gamers. We welcome the Kongregate team to the GameStop family.”

The move marks a dramatic step away from Gamestop’s current e-commerce website structure as they push to provide social functions and free flash gaming. One feature I’m hoping they retain is Kongregate’s amazing achievement system which has helped to develop a loyal userbase of 10 million monthly players.

New Gameplay Video for Bionic Commando Rearmed 2

Posted by mixmoff On July - 26 - 2010

In this gameplay video from the floor of Comic-Con, we get to see a few of Rad Spencer’s new moves (including jumping!) If you pay close attention, you’ll hear the pitch for a new contest being held at Capcom-Unity where you can remix a track and have it included in the final game.

The game definitely looks like a step-up visually from the previous version, which was nothing to sneeze at in its own right. Look for Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2 to swing its way onto XBL and PSN early next year.

Space Marine (War)Hammers Its Way Onto PC

Posted by mixmoff On July - 26 - 2010

Space Marine, the visually interesting but unfortunately named smasher/shooter from THQ isn’t just for consoles anymore. A press release went out this morning confirming the upcoming game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe will be making its way to the PC as well.

Combining intense melee and ranged combat, Space Marine puts players into the boots of one of humanity’s elite soldiers, genetically engineered and equipped with state of the art weapons and armor. Players are dropped right into the action as they battle to defend an Imperial Forge World, from an invasion by the savage and brutal Orks, using the most devastating weaponry mankind has at its disposal.

Jonathan Dowdeswell, General Manager of Relic Entertainment commented: “The loyal PC audience is incredibly important to us here at Relic so we are delighted to be able to announce the PC version of the game.”

Space Marine will be released worldwide for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 system and PC in early 2011.

Rumored for months, the crossover fighting games by two of the genre’s heaviest hitters were announced at Comic-Con this weekend.

Our biggest question after hearing the rumors was a simple one: 2d or 3d? Looks like we have our answer… and it’s both.

Capcom’s handling the Street Fighter X Tekken version, and it will be rendered lovingly in the waterbrush painted style of Street Fighter 4. Namco hasn’t shown anything of the Tekken X Street Fighter doppleganger, though word is we’ll see that game presented in Tekken’s familiar 3d setup.

So which one will you be getting? And will the Mortal Kombat franchise ever regain enough of a semblance of credibility to get their own shot at Capcom?

Console Loyalty is for Idiots

Posted by Pete On July - 24 - 2010

Have you ever read an article on a website or a thread on a forum about a console or a game for a console you don’t have?  Have you then made a blanket statement slamming said game or console because, basically, you don’t have it?  If you answered yes to these questions, then you, my friend, are an idiot.
